10 tips for the Instagramable Moments Category of the Tourism Ideathon by Karl Sanderson, Creative Director of Vivid.

I've got to say I'm super excited to be involved in the Ideathon to help improve the tourism offering for the Bailiwick of Guernsey and privileged to be one of the Judges. Guernsey is a place that's very close to my heart, having worked on the Island and with many of the amazing Islanders over the last 5 years.

I'm looking forward to seeing the ideas for the Instagramable Moments Category, so get your thinking caps and Guernsey wraps on. In an age of the digitally savvy 'Look at me' audience, who all seem to have an obsession of posting likeable grams and being the first to find the best shot, I'll be looking for engaging ideas that would make Guernsey the perfect place for Instagramable Moments.

Think about what would make a gram shareable, would it be a well loved landmark decorated differently, a self made structure, a specially designed backdrop or an amazing piece of environmental Art that visitors can interact with and encounter when they visit.

Look at how other destinations do it, for example the Iamstedam sign in Amsterdam, the Sun Voyager Sculpture in Iceland, Sverd i fjell in Norway, the Angel of the North in Gateshead, Jeff Koons's Giant Floral Puppy in Bilboa and the Comedy Carpet in the Seaside resort of Blackpool, these are just a few ideas that other places have created that promote Instagramable Moments.

As a place, Guernsey needs to act like an ambassador of every visitor's Instagrammable moment, so how could Guernsey reach out to visitors on thier Instagram profile to keep the conversation flowing and also inspire new visitors to the Islands?

Good luck and I'm looking forward to seeing all your great ideas! To get you started here are my top 10 tips that will hopefully help you create a Great Guernsey Instagramable Moment!

  1. Don't take for granted what you see everyday!
For a potential visitor they may never has stepped foot or visited the Islands.
  2. Guernsey Greats! What is Guernsey famous for?
What makes the Islands so unique, what's different here to other destinations!?
  3. What would your hashtag be?
Include #hashtags that are memorable and that trigger emotions to inspire action.
  4. Promote the positive!
Guernsey has so many great things going for it; beautiful beaches, interesting heritage & architecture, wonderful wildlife and fantastic floral displays, how can you promote these great things within your idea.
  5. What would you Share?
This is an opportunity to create something you've always dreamed of, something that the world will gram and share.
  6. How could your idea be adapted?
Could you create merchandise from it, a possible takeaway souvenir for tourists? Could hoteliers, restaurants and businesses use it?
    Location, location, location!
  7. Where would your Instagramable Moment be placed?
Would it be where visitors arrive or leave the islands, would it be on land or in the sea? Would it be moveable, so it could be positioned all around the Islands?
  8. Size matters! Or does it?
What would make a real impact and how could people interact with your idea?
  9. Something for the senses?
What material would it be created from, Guernsey Granite or even flowers? Would your idea make a sound?
  10. K.I.S.S.
Keep it simple stupid! Whatever you think of don't overcomplicate it – Instagram's sole purpose is to share creative, beautiful and innovative images. It is modernized version of the postcard.

Startup Guernsey are holding a Tourism Ideathon Networking Breakfast for those interested in entering the Tourism Ideathon on 7th November at Urban Kitchen. The Tourism Ideathon takes place on 14th and 15th November at Moores Hotel.
