Tell me about the School of Popular Music and the launch of Spotlight?

I started the School of Popular Music three years ago. It started off as quite a small sort of side job when I was working in a bar. However, it quickly grew and the School of Popular Music was born. The organisation now offers lessons for everyone to play instruments such as the Guitar, Drums, Piano, Voice, Bass, Saxophone, Violin, Brass instruments and many more with certified tutors. It’s a fully bespoke and inclusive service like no other in the Channel Islands.

What inspired you to take the leap of faith to set up the School of Popular Music and Spotlight?

I remember when I was growing up playing the guitar that we needed more community when it came to music. I was always in the music room playing guitar with my friends so that gave me the idea to start the School of Popular Music.

The idea behind the School of Popular Music it is that it’s a hub for all ages and all abilities to come and enjoy music together. Since we started three and a half years ago the organisation has gone from strength to strength and we now have over 396 students enrolled in 2,208 classes with 8 experience tutors.

The charity Spotlight launched in the summer of 2017 and it’s different from the School of Popular Music in terms of the fact there we do not offer lessons. The organisation is more about supporting the performing arts community in Guernsey and striving to offer impactful community projects where everyone can get involved and have their moment in the spotlight.

How did Startup Guernsey assist?

I meet with Claire and Tony at Startup Guernsey when I was in the process of launching Spotlight. I had a good idea of what I wanted and needed having already set up and launched the School of Popular Music in Guernsey.

However, launching a charity requires different skills and knowledge so I thought it would be best to come in and meet the team at Startup Guernsey for their advice. It really helped me get plenty of ideas for funding as well as lots of other startup advice that’s been really useful.

Personally I’ve found that whilst I’m really driven and determined, it helps to just have the input of others to give their opinions and guidance, especially when embarking on a new venture.
